American Family Insurance, also abbreviated as AmFam, is an American private mutual company that focuses on property, casualty, and auto insurance, and also offers commercial insurance, life, health, and homeowners coverage as well as investment and retirement-planning products. A Fortune 500 company, its revenues were over $9.5 billion in 2017.

D of Lawrence, an angry customer of American Family Insurance shared his experience with this company on Consumer Affairs in January 2020:

"I had been a customer for over 30 years with both home and car insurance. I always paid my bills on time. Recently, over about a 2 year period, I had a few minor claims. First, my car was hit from behind, and I had medical bills that AmFam told me would be claimed on my insurance, but billed back to the other party. I had to call road rescue to start my car when the battery had died, I backed out of my garage and fender bumped a teenager's car who had parked in my driveway illegally (considered my fault), and then I had a major accident when I got hit by a deer on the way to the airport.

As I said previously, all of this happened in about a 2 year period. Well, my agent called and told me that "they could not renew me at my current coverage." It took me a minute to realize what she was saying. I'm not "canceled," I'm just "non-renewed." After demanding, I got a letter showing only ONE claim was considered my fault--the fender bender which was a $2K claim. So thanks a lot AM Fam. You suck."

Tell the world why Amfam sucks!

Claims former employee (Former Employee) says

"The management teams are not managers nor do they help you move forward. They are there for running reports that have nothing to do with performance of the claims dept. This company is now cutting their staff in half because they gave too much back to insureds. There are managers with other agendas and have a racist bayas towards those not of their ethnicity. NoneToo many"

Licensed Claim Adjuster / Customer Service Specialist (Former Employee) says

"Don't expect to have a life in any way. They do not care about that at all you can give 150,% and they demand more and more. Be prepared to loose any sense of value. NoneNo work life balance at all"

Casualty Claims Adjuster (Former Employee) says

"Worst management I’ve ever seen. The director down back their management no matter what. They just keep shoveling work at their employees at all costs, no matter what."

Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) says

"I wouldn’t work for the Regional Office. The work is overwhelming with extremely high expectations. They do lay offs and then they don’t have enough people to get the work complete. The turn around service for customers is not great anymore. This is also a very high stress level job. If there are problems - you can’t really go to your manager. You either won’t be able to find them or the issues with just get swept under the rug."

Licensed CSR (Former Employee) says

"I have worked for amazing Agencies and not so great agencies. Surprised to discover there is no reprcusissions for illegal activity within agencies. They're all independent contractors and allowed to do unthinkable things if they produce business. Hostile work environments are not uncommon if you choose the wrong agent to work for!"

"I would not recommend working for American Family. I worked there for over 15 years and they did not care about me as an employee. Was terminated for being off for Personal Reasons."

Identity and Access Management Analyst (Former Employee) says

"Unqualified people get hired while qualified people get pushed aside. When those qualified people asked management why they were hired, they were told they needed more experience, while others who had no prior experience get those open jobs."

"More training for certificates and under staffed. Manager was out of the office frequently. Clients did not receive insurance cards or call backs. Hours where not convenient."

Insurance Agent/ Administratve Lead (Former Employee) says

"Lomira location was terrible. Owner/ Operater expected newly licensed agents to be experts in Insurance and provided no guidence or suppoet. Lack of training was embarressing and unfair. Micromanaging and lack of leadership made work environment unbearable.NoneAll"

emphasis on sales and customer service (Former Employee) says

"I worked there three months and worked only 24 hours total. This place is real stingy about giving hours and jobs. Very temporary here. Id suggest having a steady job or steady source of income while picking up the few hours when you wantHardly any jobs available"

Office Manager/ Agency Specialist (Former Employee) says

"American Family is a good place to work or, however they are always changing agent's which always makes the centers have to change workers and they are always having different people all the time."

Customer Care Center Representative (Former Employee) says

"If you’re on a call for a lengthy amount of time and/or need to go into make busy to finish up your call you will receive a skpe asking why? Your manager has little to no contact with you. Their always in meetings or staring at their computer to see how long you’re on a call. Worst place I’ve ever worked. It’s a call center and the quality of some of the people they hire is questionable. Lastly changes in procedures comes in the form of an email and they bury you in emails. They’re more worried about quantity of calls you take then quality of service.NoneSee above"

Word Processor (Former Employee) says

"My supervisor was distant and unsympathetic when family issues arose. He was a micromanager who made you afraid to go to the restroom. Worst job experience of my life.Very nice coworkers.Poor management"

Insurance Agent/Office Manager (Current Employee) says

"I loved owning my own agency and working for an agency. the 10 years working in the insurance agency allowed me to hone my strengths and greatly improve my weaknesses. Too many decisions and changes are done internally by people with very little experience or understanding on how to effectively run a business and maintain clients."

Sales Specialist (Former Employee) says

"Awful My boss promised me a salary plus commission… He never came through with either and I took a four hour test after studying for 50 hours and still didn’t see a dime. Worst job I’ve ever had."

Office Assistant (Former Employee) says

"This agent was quite particular with the right personality match could have been a great boss. However with her inconsistencies and rapid mood changes I quickly learned this was not the right fit for me."

Danise says

"Ripoff. They do not want to pay customers who have full coverage, the fair value of your automobile.Do not use this company."

Eric W says

"The very definition of shyster is a person who uses unscrupulous, fraudulent or deceptive methods in business, and is very fitting for this company. We had adjusters that were rude, we were expected to do the adjusters job because they wouldn’t leave the office to review the damage because of Covid-19, when social distancing was easy because there were few to no people at the junkyard where the damage needed surveyed. When they did send the settlement offer it was laughably low and extremely unfair. I would not personally have insurance with them because of this dishonesty and will discourage all my friends and family to steer clear of these shysters."

Brandon zimney says

"Crooks, they give you a run around when it comes to them paying out for a claim. They lied to me many times and would like to warn anyone thinking about getting coverage from these liers. i was with them for 15 years then came time to pay my claim and would not answer calls, return calls, and would drag it out till they had reached the a time limit for the claim."

Steve says

"They refuse to settle claims and leave the insured hanging out to dry."
